Hij is aangehouden omdat de nummerplaat op de voorzijde van de auto niet aanwezig is. De auto is gehuurd en werd zonder nummerplaat afgeleverd. Het is hier helemaal niet vreemd als je een papier achter je voorruit hebt staan met daarop het nummer van je auto. Je bent ongeveer de enige wanneer je voor- en achter nummerplaat op je auto hebt. In elk geval: zonder pardon moet onze chauffeur mee met de ambtenaar. Er valt niet aan te ontkomen. Ook zijn verzoek of hij het verhuurbedrijf kan bellen om de ambtenaar tot andere gedachten te brengen, mag niet baten. Nu weet ik niet of u wel eens in Liberia auto gereden hebt? Na een kwartier komt onze chauffeur terug. Wij hadden wel gezien dat hij heel boos is en geïrriteerd, maar hij blijft bijzonder kalm, gaat achter het stuur zitten, zucht eens diep, zucht nog eens diep, start zijn motor en als wij vragen wat er nu eigenlijk aan de hand was, zegt hij de legendarische woorden: "He only waste my time". Dieneke en ik praten er geregeld over hoe de mensen in dit land sjokken, de tijd nemen, afwachten, laten wachten, rondhangen, nutteloos en doelloos uit hun ogen kijken.
