Een fantastisch team!

Mineke Foundation heeft in Liberia een team van twee vrouwen (Kuluboh Jensen en Mary Leesolee) en een man (Joe Rennie). Het is onvoorstelbaar wat zij bereikt hebben in het afgelopen jaar. De 'Just Say No' MF club is een groep van 18 jonge mensen onder leiding van Joe, die gestart is met diverse activiteiten. Voordat een dergelijke groep tot stand gebracht is, gaat er heel wat aan vooraf. Om elkaar te mobiliseren en dan ook nog samen eenzelfde kant op te gaan is een kwestie van lange adem en discipline. Leuk om te zien dat ze elk hun eigen en bijzondere capaciteiten hebben en deze ook op hun eigen wijze inzetten. Pa Ed is dit jaar toegevoegd aan het team. Hij straalt niet alleen de wijze man uit, maar is dat ook. Zijn ervaringen met jongeren die in en door de oorlog getekend zijn, zal ook van waarde zijn voor MF Liberia, daar heb ik 100% vertrouwen in.

Conflicthantering en peacebuilding zijn belangrijke onderdelen van het programma. Het is een eerste prioriteit om relaties te bouwen en goed te communiceren met elkaar. De jongeren begrijpen dat uitstekend (de mobiele telefoon heeft hier absoluut haar intrede gedaan!!). Vandaag heeft de ' Just Say No' MF club een activiteit georganiseerd voor de jeugd van Dabwe Town. Eerst een flink potje voetbal en daarna deel 1 van een toneelvoorstelling. Tonia spreekt de jongeren toe waarna ik letterlijk de kick-off mag geven.

Als je dan denkt dat er meteen fanatiek gevoetbald wordt, heb je het mis. Er wordt eerst volop gediscussieerd over wie, wat, waar en hoe. Na een tijdje klinkt dan toch het geluid van een fluitje en daar gaan ze. Wat een power, wat een kracht zit er in deze jonge mensen. Er komt nog net geen rook uit hun oren!! Na een wedstrijd van 2 x 30 minuten (iets korter als normaal, vanwege het zand en stof) en een pauze van 5 minuten kijkt Tonia mij aan. Wat zou het gaaf zijn om MF Liberia voetbaltenue's voor twee teams te kunnen geven om dit soort wedstrijden vaker te herhalen. Want in een potje voetbal zitten zo ontzettend veel elementen van conflicthantering en peacebuilding, dat is een sleutel tot succes.

Na de voetbalwedstrijd worden we verrast met gekoelde drankjes en meloen. Mary heeft tijdens het spel een aantal meloenen in stukken gesneden en de meisjes van de 'Just Say No' MF club delen limonade uit en lopen met zakjes water rond. Goeie actie en zeer gewaardeerd! Intussen wordt 'het decor' ingericht aan de rand van het voetbalveld. Drie stoelen en een tafel. Met alle energie, enthousiasme, creativiteit en 200 % inzet wordt vervolgens een stukje drama opgevoerd, waarvan ik echt perplex sta. Door de geluidsversterker (die absoluut zijn beste tijd gehad heeft!!) klinken de stemmen van de leden van de 'Just Say No' MF club. Ze spelen met zoveel passie en enthousiasme hun spel dat binnen de kortste keren het halve dorp uitloopt om te komen kijken. Een hele cirkel kinderen voegt zich rond het toneel, waarvan de boodschap zo helder is als kristal: zeg NEE tegen drugs. Ik kijk naar al die kinderkoppies die aan de lippen hangen van de talentvolle acteurs en zich helemaal vergapen aan hun spel. Tonia en ik kijken elkaar weer aan: hier is iets groots gepresteerd door deze jongeren.We zijn erdoor geroerd en dankbaar dat we met MF deze club kunnen ondersteunen. Als er ook nog een lekker broodje geserveerd wordt, houd ik het niet meer droog. Mijn hart gloeit van trots voor de groep van Joe. Wat hebben zij het goed begrepen!!

Mineke Foundation werkt vanuit het principe dat zij stap 2 zet als de inwoners van Dabwe Town stap 1 zetten, waarmee zij laten zien dat zij een verandering tot stand willen brengen. Zij bepalen het tempo en zij bepalen de activiteiten en de prioriteiten. In Nederland kunnen wij ons slechts hard maken voor middelen en materialen ter ondersteuning. De verantwoordelijkheid ligt bij de inwoners van Dabwe Town zelf. Met kleine stapjes kom je tot een prachtig resultaat. Dat hebben deze jongeren vandaag bewezen. Let op MF Nederland – dit kon nog wel eens rennen worden om ze bij te houden!!

A fantastic team!

Mineke Foundation has a team of two women (Mary Leesolee and Kuluboh Jensen) and a young man (Joe Rennie) in Liberia. It is amazing what they achieved in the past year.

The 'Just Say No "MF club is a group of 18 young people under the leadership of Joe, who started with various activities. Before such a group is established, there is a lot that goes before. In order to mobilize each and then also get them to move in the same direction is a matter of patience and discipline. Great to see that they each have their own special abilities and also use them in their own way. Pa Ed joined the team this year as an advisor. He is the wise man. His experiences with young people who are so defined by war will be of value to MF Liberia, of that I am 100% convinced.

Conflict resolution and peace building are important components of the program. It is a first priority to build relationships and to communicate well with each other. The young people understand that well (the mobile phone has absolutely made its entrance!). Today, the 'Just Say No "MF club organized an activity for the youth of Dabwe Town. First a good game of football and then part 1 of a play. Tonia says a few words to the young people and then I literally give the kick-off.

If you think that the football starts immediately after that, you're wrong. There are several lively debates about who, what, where and how. After a while, the whistle sounds and off they go. What power, what strength there is in these young people. After a match of 2 x 30 minutes (slightly shorter than normal because of the sand and dust) and a 5 minute break Tonia looks at me. It would be so cool to have MF Liberia' provide football uniform for the two teams to have these games often repeated. Because in a game of football there are so many elements of conflict management and peace building, which is a key to success.

After the match we are surprised with cold drinks and melon. During the game Mary cut up some melons and the girls of the 'Just Say No "club offer us lemonade and walk around with bags of water. A good action and very much appreciated! Meanwhile, the décor is arranged at the edge of the field. Three chairs and a table. The energy, enthusiasm, creativity and commitment with which a drama then commences totally perplexes me. Through the amplifier (whose best time is definitely in the past!) we hear the voices of the members of the 'Just Say No "MF club. They play with such passion and enthusiasm that in no time the whole village comes over to watch. Children form a circle around the stage, and the message is clear as crystal: say NO to drugs. I look at all those children hanging on the words of the talented actors and marveling at the play. Tonia and I look at each other: here a great thing is being accomplished by these young people.We are stirred by it and grateful that we can support this club with MF. When we're served sandwiches, my eyes fill with tears and my heart glows with pride for Joe's group. They have understood our message so well!

Mineke Foundation works on the principle that we take step 2 when the residents of Town Dabwe have taken step 1, through which they show that they really want to bring a change. The residents determine the pace and define the activities and priorities. In the Netherlands we can only offer resources and support materials. The responsibility lies with the residents of Dabwe Town itself. With small steps to get to a great result. These young people have proven to have taken their first step. Take note MF Netherlands - this could mean running to keep up with them!
